Description

Homemade Sopapillas are light, golden pillows of fried dough that puff up beautifully and are perfect for drizzling with honey or dusting with cinnamon sugar — a quick and irresistible dessert with pantry staples.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp shortening or butter
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
  • Optional: honey, powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cut in the shortening or butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the warm water, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 2–3 minutes until smooth.
  5. Cover and let the dough rest for 20 minutes.
  6. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into squares or triangles.
  7. Heat oil in a deep pan to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Fry dough pieces in batches until puffed and golden brown, flipping once.
  9. Drain on paper towels and serve warm with your choice of topping.

Notes

  • Ensure oil is hot enough or sopapillas may not puff.
  • Roll dough evenly to 1/4 inch for best results.
  • Add flavor twists like cocoa-cinnamon sugar or savory spices to the dough.
  • Use agave or maple syrup as an alternative to honey.
