Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp shortening or butter
- 3/4 cup warm water
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
- Optional: honey, powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the shortening or butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the warm water, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 2–3 minutes until smooth.
- Cover and let the dough rest for 20 minutes.
- Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into squares or triangles.
- Heat oil in a deep pan to 375°F (190°C).
- Fry dough pieces in batches until puffed and golden brown, flipping once.
- Drain on paper towels and serve warm with your choice of topping.

- Ensure oil is hot enough or sopapillas may not puff.
- Roll dough evenly to 1/4 inch for best results.
- Add flavor twists like cocoa-cinnamon sugar or savory spices to the dough.
