Ingredients
- Main casserole:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 cups potatoes (Yukon gold or russet), thinly sliced
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk or cream
- ½ tsp paprika (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Optional garnish:
- Chopped parsley or green onions
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
-
In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with onions and garlic until browned. Drain excess fat and season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
-
In a saucepan, melt butter, add flour to form a roux, and gradually whisk in milk until thickened. Stir in half the cheddar until melted and smooth.
-
Layer half the sliced potatoes in the dish, followed by half the beef, and some cheese sauce. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
-
Sprinkle remaining cheese on top. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
-
Uncover and bake an additional 15–20 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
-
Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Garnish as desired.
Notes
- A mandoline makes slicing potatoes quicker and more even.
- Add frozen peas or corn between layers for extra color and sweetness.
- Use sweet potatoes or a mix of cheeses for fun flavor swaps.
- Add breadcrumbs in the last 10–15 minutes for a crispy topping.
