Description
Handmade Sub Rolls are soft, chewy, and perfectly sturdy to hold your favorite sandwich fillings. Freshly baked from scratch, they add a special touch to any sub or hoagie.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 3 1/2 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- Olive oil, for greasing
- 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and softened butter. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes by hand or with a stand mixer until smooth and elastic.
- Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch the dough down and divide it into 4–6 pieces. Shape each into a log about 6–8 inches long. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Cover the rolls and let them rise for 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the rolls with egg wash.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Let cool slightly before slicing and serving with your favorite fillings.
Notes
- For added texture, sprinkle sesame seeds or everything seasoning on top after the egg wash.
- Add garlic powder or dried herbs to the dough for extra flavor.
- Brush the rolls with butter after baking for a softer crust.
- For a softer roll, cover with a towel while cooling to trap steam.
