Ingredients
- For the hamburger steaks:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp oil or butter (for cooking)
- For the onion gravy:
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Optional: a splash of cream or pinch of dried thyme
Instructions
-
In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Gently mix and form into 4 equal patties.
-
Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
-
In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook for 10–12 minutes until soft and golden.
-
Sprinkle flour over the onions. Stir and cook for 1–2 minutes to create a roux.
-
Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping the bottom of the pan. Simmer until thickened.
-
Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Simmer in the gravy for 8–10 minutes, or until fully cooked through.
-
Adjust seasoning to taste. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
Notes
- Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra heartiness.
- Use ground turkey or a meat blend for variation.
- For a smooth gravy, blend the onions before returning the patties.
- Make it gluten-free by using GF breadcrumbs and cornstarch instead of flour.
- Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
