Description

These Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy are the ultimate comfort food—juicy beef patties seared to perfection and smothered in rich, homemade onion gravy. This one-pan dinner is packed with flavor and ready in about 40 minutes, making it a go-to for cozy weeknights or Sunday-style dinners.

Ingredients

  • For the hamburger steaks:
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter (for cooking)
  • For the onion gravy:
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: a splash of cream or pinch of dried thyme

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Gently mix and form into 4 equal patties.

  2. Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

  3. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook for 10–12 minutes until soft and golden.

  4. Sprinkle flour over the onions. Stir and cook for 1–2 minutes to create a roux.

  5. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping the bottom of the pan. Simmer until thickened.

  6. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Simmer in the gravy for 8–10 minutes, or until fully cooked through.

  7. Adjust seasoning to taste. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra heartiness.
  • Use ground turkey or a meat blend for variation.
  • For a smooth gravy, blend the onions before returning the patties.
  • Make it gluten-free by using GF breadcrumbs and cornstarch instead of flour.
  • Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
