Description

These Easy Oven-Baked Cabbage Burgers are hearty, handheld meat-and-cabbage sandwiches baked in golden bread—a Midwestern comfort food classic that’s perfect for family dinners, meal prep, or freezer-friendly lunches.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups green cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce or mustard (optional)
  • Bread dough (homemade, store-bought, or 8 frozen rolls, thawed)
  • 12 tbsp olive oil or melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.

  3. Add chopped onion, garlic, and cabbage. Cook until the cabbage is tender and mixture is well combined. Season with salt, pepper, and optional Worcestershire sauce or mustard.

  4. Let the filling cool slightly. Meanwhile, roll dough into 5-inch circles.

  5. Spoon filling into the center of each circle. Fold the dough over and pinch edges to seal.

  6. Place seam-side down on prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with olive oil or melted butter.

  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Add shredded cheese to the filling for extra richness.
  • Use ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based meat for variations.
  • Whole wheat dough adds fiber and flavor.
  • Add sauerkraut or spicy mustard for a tangy kick.
  • Seal edges tightly to avoid leaks and bake seam-side down for best results.
