Description

These Crispy and Flavorful Fried Green Tomatoes are a Southern favorite, featuring tangy green tomatoes coated in a seasoned cornmeal crust and fried until perfectly golden and crunchy.


Ingredients

  • 4 green tomatoes, sliced into ¼-inch thick rounds
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Slice green tomatoes into ¼-inch rounds and discard tops and bottoms.
  2. In a shallow dish, mix cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  3. Pour buttermilk into a separate shallow dish.
  4. Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture to coat well.
  5. Heat ½ inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Once hot, fry tomatoes in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towel-lined plate.
  8. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or a sprinkle of salt.

  • Add cayenne to the batter for extra heat.
  • Substitute crushed crackers or panko for extra crunch.
  • Use regular milk for a lighter version.
  • Reheat in oven at 375°F to restore crispiness.
