These Crispy and Flavorful Fried Green Tomatoes are a Southern favorite, featuring tangy green tomatoes coated in a seasoned cornmeal crust and fried until perfectly golden and crunchy.
Ingredients
- 4 green tomatoes, sliced into ¼-inch thick rounds
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Slice green tomatoes into ¼-inch rounds and discard tops and bottoms.
- In a shallow dish, mix cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
- Pour buttermilk into a separate shallow dish.
- Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture to coat well.
- Heat ½ inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Once hot, fry tomatoes in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove and drain on paper towel-lined plate.
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or a sprinkle of salt.
Notes
- Add cayenne to the batter for extra heat.
- Substitute crushed crackers or panko for extra crunch.
- Use regular milk for a lighter version.
- Reheat in oven at 375°F to restore crispiness.
- Blot juicy tomatoes before coating to improve batter adhesion.
