Ingredients
- 1 large loaf of crusty Italian or French bread
- 1 lb thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin steak
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1–2 bell peppers, sliced (any color)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded or sliced provolone or mozzarella cheese
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or 1 clove garlic, minced
- Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with foil.
- Slice the top off the loaf of bread and hollow out the inside, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and bell peppers until soft and caramelized, about 5–7 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, cook steak with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce until browned and cooked through. Mix with the sautéed vegetables.
- Melt butter and stir in garlic powder or fresh garlic. Brush the inside of the bread with garlic butter.
- Layer half the cheese inside the bread, add the steak and veggie mixture, and top with remaining cheese.
- Place the loaf on the baking sheet, cover with foil, and bake for 15–20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 5–10 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly, then slice and garnish with parsley if desired. Serve warm.
Notes
- Use mushrooms, ground beef, or chicken as filling alternatives.
- Add jalapeños or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
- Try different cheeses like cheddar, Swiss, or pepper jack.
- Brush garlic butter and layer cheese first to prevent soggy bread.
- Reheat leftovers in the oven to maintain crispiness.
